چکیده

Calving difficulty, survival from birth to weaning, birth weight, and weaning weight of 167 calves and carcass traits of 88 cattle (63 for adjusted fat thickness) were compared for progeny of Red Poll and Longhorn bulls mated to crossbred cows that calved at 2 or 3 yr of age. Results indicated that Longhornsired calves required 28% less assistance at calving than Red Poll-sired calves when dams calved at 2 yr of age (P<0.05), but there was no difference between Red Polland Longhorn-sired calves for calving difficulty with 3yr-old cows. Red Poll-sired calves had significantly greater birth and weaning BW than did Longhorn-sired calves for 2-yrold dams. Significant differences attribut1Published as Journal Series no.13795, Nebraska Agric. Res. There was a significant interaction between sire breed and age of dam only for calving difficulty. Within sire breed, calving difficulty of 2yr-old dams was greater than that for 3yr-old dams, and calves from 2-yr-old dams also were significantly lighter at weaning than were calves from 3-yr-old dams (P<0 .01). Effects of breed group by location interaction on crossbred cattle in Nebraska and Florida.

Data on 2,744 calves produced in Clay Center, Nebraska and Brooksville, Florida were used to evaluate the importance of genotype x location interactions on the reproductive and maternal performance of eight breed groups of F1 crossbred cows. A total of 648 F1 crossbred cows included Bos taurus x Bos taurus (Bt x Bt) crosses: Hereford x Angus reciprocal crossbreds (HA and AH), Pinzgauer x Angus ...

Production characters of first generation cows of a five-breed diallel: reproduction of mature cows and preweaning performance of calves by two third-breed sires.

The fourth through sixth parity of 5- to 10-yr-old cows were used to evaluate trade-offs involved with sires of large mature size vs medium mature size in a terminal sire crossbreeding program and to characterize five breeds and their crosses for their potential as dam lines. Charolais and Red Poll bulls, representing large (L) and medium (M) mature size, respectively, were mated to cows repres...

Calving and weaning characteristics of Angus-, Gray Brahman-, Gir-, Indu-Brazil-, Nellore-, and Red Brahman-sired F1 calves.

Calving and weaning data from crossbred calves sired by five Bos indicus breeds and one Bos taurus breed were evaluated. Data included calving and weaning records of F1 calves out of multiparous Hereford cows and sired by Angus, Gray Brahman, Gir, Indu-Brazil, Nellore, and Red Brahman bulls. At calving, Angus-sired calves had shorter gestations and lower (more desirable) calving ease scores and...

Reproduction and calf performance of Angus-sired and Polled Hereford-sired cows bred to Angus and Brahman bulls for primiparous calving as two- vs three-year-olds.

This 4-yr study was conducted with Angus (A)-sired and Polled Hereford (PH)-sired crossbred heifers that were exposed to either A or medium-frame Brahman (B) bulls from primiparous calvings either as 2- or 3-yr-olds. Each year, heifers were allotted at random within breed composition and age of dam to breeding groups on pasture for an 84-d breeding period that began in late March or early April...

Comparison of crossbred cows containing various proportions of Brahman in spring or fall calving systems. I. Productivity as two-year-olds.

Productivity of 2-yr-old crossbred cows containing various proportions (0, 1/4 or 1/2) of Brahman breeding was evaluated using 203 spring-calving and 171 fall-calving heifers over a 3-yr period. All heifers were mated to Limousin sires. Percentage of cows exposed to breeding that weaned a calf was the only trait for which a significant crossbred cow group x season of calving interaction was fou...
